Thoughts on Steve Jobs Death

Steve Jobs in Apple products

No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true. – Steve Jobs

I was sitting in my boss’s office when I heard about the passing of Steve Jobs last night. It was one of those things that you sorta know in the back of your head might be coming – because he did step down from leading Apple several months ago – but you don’t expect it when it happens.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family – and anyone who knew him as a friend and mentor.

Also, I look to Steve’s life as a model of passion and energy. From what I know about Jobs, he was super passionate about the products that he (and his company) created. During his speaking engagements when he announced something new like the iPod, or iPhone or any new gizmo – he was almost like a little kid – excited about showing it off, and expressing how cool it was.

He loved what he did.

For me, I want that passion too.

That fire and gusto for my faith. Imagine what would happen if people of faith actually used their creativity and passion like Jobs did! I’m not saying all don’t – but what if more, did!

The energy and enthusiasm for my marriage – for loving and enjoying every detail of the woman God has blessed me with. No, I probably won’t be showing off every cool feature she has to an audience, but I still can be enthusiastic and passionate about her – in front of other people — not belittling our relationship.

The end of a life leads me to thoughts of legacy and the time I have left, and where I’m going when I’m done on this giant mud ball. I think these are all good places to hang out – and really chew on for awhile.

It is better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of feasting, for death is the destiny of every man; the living should take this to heart. – Ecc. 7:2

What did you take from the passing of Steve Jobs?

What a great post, Stu! My thought was how each of us are only a phone call away from life changing circumstances. May we live each day in light of THAT day!

I love the idea of using one’s passion with their faith and why not! The world would be a best place if we lived by the heart which is where faith stems from! Lovely blog!
